SAE AS CAD Models

download SAE AS 3d CAD ModelsThe SAE AS library is a set of aerospace standards managed by SAE International. SAE aerospace standards represent over 8,500 active standards. The AS standards are designed by engineers for use in high-stress environments.

SAE International AS standards ensure parts used by engineers in mobility applications and high-stress environments won’t fail when it counts. Nobody wants fasteners on an aircraft to fail. SAE AS standards exist to mitigate that possibility.

The AS standards contain a wide variety of materials including documents on practices, processes, and 2D/3D part data.

At the turn of the century, the new automobile industry was in desperate need of engineering standards. Several prominent voices joined together and ultimately formed the Society of Automobile Engineers in 1905. Even Henry Ford joined as the organization’s first vice president.

By 1916, it became clear that other mobility industries needed a standards group dedicated to creating safe engineering standards as well. A few prominent figures were on board with such a standard, including Thomas Edison, Glenn Curtiss, Glenn Martin, and Orville Wright. The Society of Automotive Engineers changed its name to The Society of Automotive Engineers to include aerospace and marine standards as well as their foundation in automobiles and the rest is history.

Today, SAE International represents more than 128,000 engineers and other industry professionals.

This is the SAE stated mission and vision from their website:

Our Mission: To advance mobility knowledge and solutions for the benefit of humanity.

Our Vision: SAE is the leader in connecting and educating mobility professionals to enable safe, clean, and accessible mobility solutions.

SAE StandardsSAE International offers a subscription to the standards.

Purchasing a subscription to the standards is an important step; however, getting engineers to actively use the standards isn’t easy. The challenge with the PDF standards is that someone must manually create the 3D CAD models of the SAE AS standard they need in their designs. It’s a lot of work.

Many government projects and private industry projects require the use of SAE standards. Choosing to ignore the standards or use outdated versions of the standards at best leads to delays in the project, and at worst, leads to litigation from equipment malfunction. The standards are continually updated, which makes it challenging to ensure constant compliance for companies that create CAD libraries based on the standards specs for themselves.

SAE recognizes the challenge companies face when creating their own standards CAD library. Because of this, SAE partnered with CADENAS PARTsolutions to create certified 3D CAD models of the SAE AS standard.

The SAE AS certified 3D models are available for consumption in three ways:

  1. Through the online portal
  2. PARTS4CAD direct CAD plugin (Inventor, CREO, Solid Works, Solid Edge)
  3. PARTsolutions Desktop with a direct CAD plugin (All major CAD + PLM + ERP Integrations)
